Cassie

Better voice memos, as cassette tapes, inside iMessage.

What is Cassie?

Cassie is an iMessage app for sending voice memos that look and feel like cassette tapes.

  • Record up to 3 minutes without leaving the conversation.
  • Every tape gets a transcript, so it can be read instead of played.
  • Listen at 0.5×, 1×, 1.5× or 2×, and pick up where you left off.
  • The rack collects every tape in a conversation in one list, with new ones marked.
  • Tapes expire 3 days after they're sent.

Cassie works on iPhone and iPad with iOS 16 or later, in iMessage conversations. Everyone who wants to play a tape needs Cassie installed.

Where do I find Cassie?

Open a conversation in Messages, tap the apps button (+) next to the text field, and choose Cassie.

My friend can't open my tape.

They need Cassie installed on an iPhone or iPad. Cassie can't be opened on a Mac, and it doesn't work in green-bubble (SMS or RCS) conversations, including group chats with an Android phone.

Where did my tape go?

Tapes expire 3 days after they're sent, for everyone. Expired tapes leave the rack, and their messages show "This tape expired".

Why is there no transcript?

Transcripts need speech recognition permission. Some phones can't transcribe long tapes on the device; in that case a tape you receive may offer "tap to try Apple's speech service". Nothing is sent to Apple unless you tap.

Cassie can't use the microphone or speech recognition.

Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone (or Speech Recognition) and turn on Cassie. Cassie's About screen (the ⓘ on its first screen) shows the exact path.

A tape won't load.

Tapes are stored in iCloud, so loading one needs an internet connection. Check you're online, then tap the tape again.

Privacy policy

Effective October 2, 2026

This policy explains what Cassie stores, where, and for how long. Cassie has no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and we never sell your data.

What Cassie stores

When you send a tape, Cassie uploads to iCloud (Apple's CloudKit service):

  • the audio recording;
  • its transcript and its optional title;
  • your display name, if you set one (group chats only);
  • an identifier that groups your tapes together, which Messages provides and which isn't your name, number or Apple ID.

Apple also records which iCloud account created each tape.

Who can see your tapes

Anyone who has a Cassie message from a conversation can open that conversation's tapes. Tapes are stored in our iCloud database and aren't end-to-end encrypted, so Apple and the developer of Cassie could technically access them. We don't look at your tapes.

How long tapes are kept

Every tape expires 3 days after it's uploaded, and Cassie stops showing it. The sender's Cassie deletes it from iCloud the next time the sender opens Cassie online after it expires. If the sender stops using Cassie, a tape can stay in iCloud longer.

On your device

Your unsent recording, downloaded copies of tapes, transcripts your phone made, and your playback places and "new" markers are kept on your device, protected while your phone is locked. Downloaded copies are removed after 24 hours, and the rest is removed as tapes expire.

Transcripts

Cassie transcribes on your device when it can. If it can't, your own tapes under a minute long may be sent to Apple's speech service. A tape you receive is sent to Apple's speech service only if you tap to ask for it. Apple's privacy policy covers its speech service.

Permissions

Cassie asks for the microphone to record your tapes, and speech recognition to transcribe them. It asks only when you first need them.

Crash reports

If you've chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple may send us anonymous crash reports. They don't include your tapes.

Deleting your data

Discard removes an unsent recording from your phone. Sent tapes delete themselves as described above. To ask for a tape to be removed sooner, email us.

Children

Cassie isn't directed at children under 13.
